Why COZHOM Went Back 3,000 Years to Find the God of Sleep?

The story behind Hypnos, The 11PM Holy Bedtime Ritual, and why we believe the modern world needs to respect the night again
There are millions of products designed to help people get through the day.
Coffee to wake you up.
Energy drinks to keep you going.
Productivity apps to help you do more.
Phones to keep you connected.
Notifications to make sure you never miss anything.
But when the day finally ends, what do we have?
Another screen.
Another notification.
Another video.
Another email.
Another thought about tomorrow.
And then we expect ourselves to simply close our eyes and fall asleep.
At COZHOM, we started asking a different question.
What if the problem isn't that we don't have enough ways to sleep?
What if we've forgotten how to enter the night?
That question eventually led us somewhere unexpected.
Not to another modern sleep technology.
Not to another app.
Not to another supplement.
But thousands of years into the past.
To Ancient Greece.
To a god whose name has survived for more than two thousand years.
Hypnos.
The ancient personification of sleep.
And that is why COZHOM invested significant time, creative work, research, storytelling, audio production, and development into building the Hypnos IP as part of our bedtime experience.
Because we don't simply want to make a product that sits beside your bed.
We want to create a reason to respect the night.
1. Why Would a Modern Sleep Brand Look to Ancient Greece?
At first, the idea may sound unusual.
COZHOM is a modern brand.
We use modern manufacturing.
Modern materials.
Modern NFC technology.
Modern audio production.
Our customers live in modern cities.
They work on laptops.
They communicate through smartphones.
They live in a world completely different from Ancient Greece.
So why Hypnos?
Because although the world has changed dramatically, one thing hasn't changed:
Human beings still have to enter the night.
Thousands of years ago, people watched the sun disappear.
Today, we watch our phone screens.
Thousands of years ago, night represented something mysterious and powerful.
Today, we often treat night as the final available hours of productivity.
Thousands of years ago, sleep was something associated with gods and mythology.
Today, we measure it with watches and apps.
Perhaps we've gained incredible technology.
But somewhere along the way, we may have lost something else:
A sense of reverence for the night.
That is the philosophical foundation of COZHOM.
Maybe We Forgot How to Respect the Night.
2. Who Is Hypnos?
In Greek mythology, Hypnos is the personification of sleep.
His name itself comes from the ancient Greek word ὕπνος, meaning sleep. In Homer's Iliad, Hypnos appears as a divine figure rather than merely an abstract idea. The text even describes him as νήδυμος Ὕπνος, using an epithet associated with sweet, refreshing sleep.
That distinction is fascinating.
The ancient Greeks didn't simply think of sleep as a biological function.
They could imagine it as something with presence.
Something powerful.
Something that could enter the world.
Something worthy of a story.
And that idea became the foundation for COZHOM's Hypnos experience.
What if sleep had a guardian?
What if the night had a presence?
What if bedtime could feel like entering a story rather than simply turning off a light?
3. Hypnos Was Powerful Enough to Put Zeus to Sleep
This is where the story becomes particularly interesting.
In Book 14 of Homer's Iliad, Hera seeks the help of Hypnos.
Her objective is extraordinary:
She wants Zeus to sleep.
Hypnos initially refuses.
He reminds Hera that he has helped her before, causing Zeus to fall into sleep, and that when Zeus eventually awoke, he was furious. Hypnos fled to Night, who protected him. The passage emphasizes Zeus's fear or awe of Night, showing that even the most powerful god could not simply disregard her.
Eventually, after Hera promises him Pasithea, Hypnos agrees to help.
He accompanies Hera.
And Zeus falls into sleep.
The story is mythological, of course.
We don't interpret it as scientific evidence.
We don't claim that a mythological god can cause modern people to sleep.
But there is something profoundly beautiful about the symbolism.
Even Zeus had to surrender to the night.
The most powerful god.
The god who commands thunder.
The god who commands the heavens.
The god who can command others.
Even Zeus could not command himself to remain awake forever.
Eventually:
Sleep comes.
4. That Is Exactly Why Hypnos Belongs in COZHOM
Think about modern life.
We spend the entire day trying to control things.
Control our schedules.
Control our work.
Control our businesses.
Control our families.
Control our notifications.
Control our productivity.
And then, at night, we try to control sleep.
“I need to sleep.”
“Why am I still awake?”
“I have to sleep now.”
“Tomorrow is going to be terrible if I don't sleep.”
The night becomes another problem to solve.
But perhaps sleep is not something we can simply command.
Perhaps the night requires a different attitude.
**Less control.
More surrender.**
**Less productivity.
More ritual.**
**Less noise.
More respect.**
And that is where Hypnos enters the COZHOM philosophy.
5. We Didn't Choose Hypnos Because He Is “A Sleep God”
That would have been too easy.
We could have simply searched for a famous mythological figure associated with sleep and put his name on a product.
But that's not what we wanted.
We wanted a character whose story could communicate something deeper.
Hypnos represents a world in which:
Sleep has power.
Night has power.
Even gods must surrender to sleep.
And that is remarkably relevant to modern life.
Because perhaps our biggest problem isn't that we don't know enough about sleep.
Perhaps we know too much about trying to control it.
We track it.
Measure it.
Score it.
Analyze it.
Optimize it.
And sometimes we forget simply to experience the night.
6. Why We Invested So Much in the Hypnos IP
Creating a character is easy.
Creating a logo is easy.
Finding a mythological name is easy.
Creating something that people actually want to return to every night is much harder.
That's why COZHOM invested substantial resources into the development of Hypnos.
We wanted to build more than a name.
We wanted to build:
A character.
A voice.
A world.
A story.
A nighttime experience.
The Hypnos audio is therefore not simply background music.
It is part of the COZHOM ritual.
When you tap the bottom of the bottle with an NFC-enabled phone, you don't simply open another piece of generic meditation audio.
You enter the Hypnos experience.
And that distinction matters.
7. Why We Went Back to The Iliad
We could have invented an entirely fictional story.
But there was already an extraordinary story waiting for us.
Homer's Iliad.
More specifically, Book 14.
This section gives us one of the most fascinating encounters involving Hypnos.
Hera seeks him.
Hypnos remembers what happened the last time he helped her.
He remembers Zeus's anger.
He knows the risk.
And he understands the power of Night.
Eventually, he agrees.
The story gives Hypnos something many modern fictional sleep characters don't have:
History.
Conflict.
Personality.
Power.
Mystery.
That gave us the foundation for something much richer.
8. But We Didn't Simply Turn The Iliad Into an Audiobook
This is another important distinction.
COZHOM's Hypnos audio is not intended to be a literal reading of Homer's Iliad.
We use the ancient story as inspiration and source material, then adapt and reimagine the narrative for a modern bedtime experience.
Why?
Because an ancient epic poem and a modern bedtime ritual have completely different purposes.
The Iliad was composed for an ancient audience.
COZHOM is designed for someone lying in bed in 2026.
Perhaps she has just finished answering emails.
Perhaps her children are finally asleep.
Perhaps she has spent the entire day working.
Perhaps she is lying in a dark bedroom with her phone beside her.
She doesn't need another history lesson.
She needs a story that can carry her away from the day.
That's why our adaptation focuses on atmosphere, narrative flow, imagery, voice, pacing, and repetition.
9. Why We Don't Want the Audio to Become Boring
This is one of the most difficult parts of designing bedtime audio.
If you create a story that is too short, users hear it once and remember everything.
The second night feels repetitive.
The third night becomes predictable.
Eventually:
Skip.
We didn't want that.
We wanted Hypnos to become something users could return to.
Night after night.
That's why the content was designed with enough narrative depth, atmosphere, and variation to remain engaging without demanding active attention.
The goal is not to make you sit up and concentrate on every sentence.
It's the opposite.
The story should gradually become familiar without becoming irritating.
You don't need to know exactly what comes next.
You don't need to remember every detail.
You simply listen.
10. Why Mythology Works So Well at Night
There is something uniquely powerful about mythology.
Myths were created long before smartphones.
Before streaming services.
Before social media.
Before notifications.
They were stories people carried with them.
Stories about gods.
Night.
Love.
Fear.
War.
Death.
Dreams.
Destiny.
Human weakness.
Human desire.
They weren't simply entertainment.
They were ways of making sense of things that were bigger than human beings.
And perhaps that is exactly what modern bedtime needs.
Something bigger than the endless stream of information on our screens.
11. Hypnos Gives the Night a Sense of Presence
This is perhaps the most important reason COZHOM chose a god rather than an abstract concept.
“Sleep.”
That's a function.
“Relaxation.”
That's a state.
“Bedtime.”
That's a time of day.
But:
Hypnos
is a character.
He has a name.
A history.
A story.
A voice.
A mythology.
He gives the night a personality.
And that creates something we believe modern sleep products often lack:
Ritual significance.
When you light a candle, the candle isn't necessarily “doing” something medical.
It creates atmosphere.
When someone drinks tea before bed, the tea isn't necessarily “causing” sleep.
It can become part of a ritual.
When someone listens to a familiar story, the story isn't necessarily treating insomnia.
It creates a transition.
Hypnos works in the same way.
He becomes a symbol of the moment when the day ends.
12. The Ancient Greeks Personified Sleep. We Personified the Night
COZHOM's philosophy goes one step further.
We aren't saying:
“Hypnos will make you sleep.”
That would reduce a beautiful mythological character to a marketing claim.
Instead, we say:
“Hypnos reminds us that sleep has always been more than a biological function in the human imagination.”
For thousands of years, humans have treated night differently from day.
Night had mystery.
Night had silence.
Night had dreams.
Night had gods.
Today, our bedrooms are full of artificial light.
Our phones are within reach.
Our work can follow us into bed.
The boundary between day and night has almost disappeared.
Maybe that's why the idea of Hypnos feels so relevant again.
13. Why “Respect the Night” Became Our Philosophy
This brings us back to COZHOM's central idea:
Maybe We Forgot How to Respect the Night.
We don't claim this is the medical cause of insomnia.
We don't claim that every person who struggles with sleep has simply forgotten to respect the night.
That's not what we mean.
It's a philosophical observation.
We believe modern life has gradually turned night into an extension of daytime.
And perhaps we could benefit from restoring a boundary.
At 11 PM:
Work ends.
Scrolling ends.
Responding ends.
Thinking about tomorrow can wait.
And the ritual begins.
14. This Is Why Hypnos Is Part of the Four-Step Ritual
COZHOM isn't only an audio experience.
Hypnos is the final part of a larger ritual:
APPLY → BREATHE → MASSAGE → LISTEN
APPLY
Begin the ritual with the COZHOM Essence.
BREATHE
Complete three rounds of 4-7-8 breathing.
MASSAGE
Gently massage the sleep point behind the ears 30 times.
LISTEN
Tap the bottom of the bottle with an NFC-enabled phone and enter the Hypnos experience.
The first three steps gradually move your attention inward.
The final step lets you stop doing.
You listen.
And eventually:
you let the night take over.
15. Why We Believe Women Especially Deserve This Ritual
COZHOM is intentionally designed with women at the center.
Not because every woman experiences sleep in the same way.
She doesn't.
But because women often move through extraordinarily demanding days.
A mother may spend the entire day taking care of everyone else.
A professional may spend the day making decisions.
A wife may spend the evening managing family responsibilities.
A woman going through hormonal changes may experience nights that feel different from earlier stages of her life.
And sometimes, after everyone else has gone to sleep:
she is still awake.
We don't want COZHOM to tell her:
“Try harder.”
We want to tell her:
“The night belongs to you too.”
16. Hypnos Is Not There to Command You to Sleep
This is an important part of our philosophy.
Hypnos isn't a boss.
He isn't a coach.
He isn't shouting:
“Go to sleep!”
That's not what we want.
The ancient myth is actually more interesting than that.
Hypnos himself understands the power of Night.
He knows Zeus.
He knows the consequences.
He knows that even the gods have limits.
So the modern COZHOM interpretation of Hypnos isn't about commanding sleep.
It's about surrendering to the night.
17. We Want Hypnos to Become a Modern Bedtime Companion
Imagine using COZHOM tonight.
You apply the essence.
You breathe.
You massage.
You tap the bottle.
And you hear:
Hypnos.
Not an advertisement.
Not another notification.
Not another productivity podcast.
Not another piece of content asking you to do something.
A story.
A voice from an ancient world.
A reminder that night existed long before our screens.
And that sleep has always been part of being human.
That's the experience we wanted to create.
18. Why We Believe This Makes COZHOM Different
There are many products that can sit beside your bed.
There are many products that can have pleasant scents.
There are many meditation apps.
There are many sleep playlists.
There are many bedtime products.
But COZHOM wanted to build something that could connect all of these elements through a single idea:
Respect the Night.
The essence gives the ritual a physical beginning.
The breathing creates a pause.
The massage creates a simple physical action.
Hypnos gives the night a story.
And the story gives the ritual meaning.
19. From Ancient Myth to Modern Technology
There is something beautiful about this contrast.
Hypnos comes from an ancient world.
But you access his story through NFC technology.
A mythological god of sleep.
Activated by a modern bottle.
On a modern smartphone.
In a modern bedroom.
This is exactly what COZHOM wanted.
Ancient wisdom meets modern ritual.
Not because ancient mythology is scientifically superior to modern knowledge.
It isn't.
But because stories have a different kind of power.
They help us feel.
They help us remember.
They help us create meaning.
And bedtime doesn't always need more information.
Sometimes it needs meaning.
20. We Spent the Money Because We Didn't Want Another Generic Sleep Product
Could we have created a cheaper audio track?
Yes.
Could we have used generic relaxing music?
Yes.
Could we have called it “Sleep Meditation”?
Yes.
It would have been easier.
It would have been cheaper.
And perhaps it would have been perfectly acceptable.
But it wouldn't have been COZHOM.
We wanted something that could become part of a larger world.
Something that users could remember.
Something that could become recognizable.
Something that could eventually become part of the cultural identity of the brand.
**Hypnos is not decoration.
He is part of the philosophy.**
21. We Don't Want You to Believe in the God of Sleep
You don't have to believe in Greek mythology.
You don't have to believe Hypnos is real.
You don't even need to know the Iliad.
That's not the point.
The point is what Hypnos represents.
Sleep has always been bigger than our daily schedules.
Night has always been different from day.
And human beings have always created rituals around the transition.
COZHOM simply gives that ancient idea a modern form.
22. What We Hope You Feel at the End
After three minutes, we don't want you thinking:
“Did the product work?”
We'd rather you think:
“The day is over.”
“I don't need to solve anything else tonight.”
“I can simply be here.”
And then:
Listen.
Let Hypnos tell his story.
Let the ancient night enter the modern bedroom.
And let yourself become quiet.
Hypnos Is Our Reminder
Thousands of years ago, Homer wrote about a world where gods could command armies, influence kings, shape destiny—and yet sleep remained powerful enough to overcome even Zeus. In The Iliad, Hypnos himself understands the power of Night and seeks her protection.
We don't need to interpret that story literally.
We can simply appreciate what it represents.
No matter how powerful we think we are, eventually the day ends.
Eventually, the work ends.
Eventually, the phone goes down.
Eventually, the world becomes quiet.
And perhaps we should welcome that moment instead of fighting it.
This Is Why We Created Hypnos
Not to promise sleep.
Not to treat insomnia.
Not to replace professional care.
Not to turn mythology into medicine.
But to give the night back something we believe modern life has taken away:
Mystery.
Ritual.
Meaning.
Respect.
That's why COZHOM invested in Hypnos.
Because we don't want to build another product that simply tells you:
“Sleep better.”
We want to build a brand that asks a deeper question:
What if we learned to respect the night again?
And perhaps that's where the ritual begins.
The 11PM Holy Bedtime Ritual
APPLY → BREATHE → MASSAGE → LISTEN
Three quiet minutes.
A bottle.
A ritual.
A story.
And Hypnos waiting at the other side of the night.
CAN'T SLEEP? CHOOSE COZHOM.
